Welcome Readers! First up in our New Authors in November series is Fantasy Author Em Shotwell! Her stories are a mixture of Gothic fantasy and magical realism with a slice of southern goodness and romantic spice! Find out more about this brilliant new author below and don't forget to enter our giveaways.
1. Tell our readers a little about yourself and your work.
I'm the author of Blackbird Summer (City Owl Press, 2016). I live in South Louisiana with a husband who spoils me and two mini-superheroes who call me mom. I think the most interesting characters are the ones who live on the sidelines, and that small towns often hide the biggest secrets. I'm inspired by tall tales and local legends.
When I'm not writing about misfits and oddballs, I enjoy spending time outdoors hiking, and debating Doctor Who facts with her obsessed ten-year-old.
2. What genres do you write or want to write in the future?
Southern-fried-fantasy and magical realism are my jam. My characters will bless your heart between sips of sweet tea--but be warned! There is often more to them than meets the eye. I love to craft stories around outcasts and weirdos with a spark of magic and a penchant for finding trouble.
While Tallulah, Logan, and Delia (the characters from my forthcoming novel, Blackbird Summer) have at least two more books in their story, I also have plans for a YA reincarnation romance, and am currently working on a project that involves a family of misfits whose women are known for their ability to read tea-leaves.
3. What attracted you to the City Owl Press?
Originally, I wasn’t sure because City Owl Press was so new and so small, but good things often come in small packages! I researched the editors, read their books, and emailed with Heather McCorkle and soon fell in love with the idea of being a City Owl author. City Owl is a hard working small press with a big vision that I knew I wanted to be a part of.
4. What has your experience been like working with City Owl Press?
So far it has been great! The editors are super inclusive with every aspect of the process. If they offer a contract, it is because they love your book. The editors also really, really want to help their authors succeed. Every question gets answered and every email is replied too. (And I email a LOT. Like, a lot lot…sorry Heather! Lol.) I would sign with them again in a heartbeat.
5. Where do you see yourself in 5, 10 years?
I have no plans to ever stop writing!
6. Tell our readers why they should pick up your book.
If you are a fan of highbrow, literary tomes, then my book isn’t for you. If you dig stories about magic, forbidden romance, and the un-breaking bonds of sisterhood, then you should give Blackbird Summer a try. You won’t be disappointed.
